Islam Essentials: Faith in Practice

Course Overview

  • This course will cover the fundamental knowledge one needs to practice Islam. Students will engage in a foundational study of prayer, zakat, and fasting. Classes will be 1 hour long every week.

  • The fiqh of prayer section will discuss prayer times, the adhan, iqama, conditions and integrals of prayer, and how to make the most of prayer. Once completed, students will study fasting and zakat.

  • We will cover the text Ascent to Felicity by Imam al-Shurunbulali 

Who Can Take this Course?

  • Anyone who wants to understand and comprehend the basic tenets of belief and practice Islam.

  • Anyone looking to build a systematic understanding and practice of Islam. Non-Muslims are welcome as well.

  • There are no prerequisites. The text is fully English. Come with an open mind.

  • Open to everyone of any age range. Just be able to keep up.

Student Expectations

  • Attend class live every week as much as possible. Though recordings will be available after, the course is built on engaging in discussion. Recordings will only be sharable with enrolled students.

  • Course load is not heavy. But, be aware of the discussions and topics in the book.

  • Discuss the importance and method of prayer and its various rulings 

  • How to observe Ramadan and fasting and their various rulings 

  • Learn how to pay your zakat yearly

  • How to make the Hajj pilgrimage

Meet Your Instructor

Imam Nihal Khan is the founder of Maktab Academy & an Instructor at Fawakih Institute. He received an 'alimiyya degree from Nadwatul 'Ulama in Lucknow, India, a MA in Islamic Studies from the Hartford Seminary, studied at the Harvard Divinity School, and holds a BA in Psychology from Montclair State University. In addition to working with masjids, Imam Nihal has been a chaplain at hospitals and jails. You can read more about him at his personal website.
